Small bonsai pot with well aged bonsai tree.

Pot size and colours will vary -  Approx Pot size : 13cm x 5cm x 11cm

The picture may vary from the exact tree. The tree can change appearance during different seasons as well as size and shape due to shaping and pruning. The pots will also have variations as they are hand made clay pots. Each tree and pot is completely unique and bespoke. These are hand reared trees and each one is individual. We will package the tree and pot to be couriered safely to your door.

This is a rather small, slow-growing tree with a beautiful slender stem. It often has quite a few base branches. As it can be grown as a shrub or bush.  This tree creates a stunning dense crown of shiny dark green leaves. This tree makes an excellent bonsai as it is a great pot plant, it can be clipped and trained easily, and it will grow in shade. So it is very forgiving and sprouts new shoots easily. Buxus is a small, very slow-growing tree up which can get up to about 6 - 7.5 m tall. African box trees usually have greenish-brown stems which can get up to 300 mm/30 cm in diameter but usually they do not grow so large. The twigs are angled and slightly hairy when young they then do get smoother when old. The leaves, are opposite and grow quite close together which makes quite a beautiful dense canopy. They are arranged at right angles to each other and can get up to about 25 mm in length. They are relatively oval in shape to a widely lance-shaped, with a blunt pointed round apex and are narrow at the base. The leaves are a beautiful deep green colour, slightly leathery, smooth on both sides. The lateral veins scarcely visible. The flowers will usually bloom from around late Winter to Spring (July to October). Very interestingly both female and male flowers are borne separately on the same tree. The term used to describe trees plants that do this is called a monoecious situation. They have tiny flowers which are greenish in colour. The way to tell the difference between the male and female flowers is as follows. Male flowers are held in short heads in the axils (base) of the leaves and the female are usually single but can also occasionally be grouped. The Buxus fruit is a small greenish brown capsule, which is about 7 mm in diameter. This is crowned with 3 conspicuous horns. The horns are the remains of the styles. The fruits ripen from around late summer to early winter (February to June). Once they ripen, the fruit usually splits to release the very shiny black seeds.

Buxus can tolerate a wide range of light conditions from full sun to fairly dense shade. This makes it a very adaptable bonsai. Should you decide to move the treee around from time to time. The African leaf boxwood tree needs plenty of water in warm weather but will grow pretty much anywhere, it can even survive in high frost and cold areas.

It is suggested to feed with a nitrogen rich fertiliser in spring and late summer for the which will help boost your bonsai growth.

Buxus can be grown from seeds, although it is very slow. It is suggested to sow the seeds in spring to summer. It can also be propagated from cuttings which should be taken in summer, then treated with rooting hormone and rooted in a moist environment with heating mat.

Bonsai facts;

The Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’ is best suited to be positioned outside in a sunny/ semi-shaded spot, during winter it could be bought inside into a cold room with plenty of light for protection. During the summer months the Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’needs a lot of water but be careful to avoid excess soil wetness. When fertilizing your Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’ use a solid organic fertilizer once a month or alternatively use a liquid fertilizer every week during growing season (do not fertilize during the winter dormant months). Once your Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’ becomes established, thin out the leaves to allow light to get in as this prevents the inner twigs from dying. The Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’ handles hard pruning extensive deadwood pruning with ease. Should you wish to wire your Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’ be careful of the bark as any marks created will remain there for a long time. You should repot your Buxus Sempervirens ‘Faulkner’ every two to five years (size and age will factor).

The pictures of the base are of a slightly more aged tree. Just as an example of what you can expect in time.
