Also Known as the South African Christmas tree or Afrocarpus Falcultus. This majestic tree can reach amazing heights of up to 45 metres. This is an evergreen tree meaning it will keep its leaves all year around. The Outeniqua Yellowwood has an amazingly beautiful bark starting off smooth on younger stems and flaking off on older stems and branches. The tree bears cones and can be considered a conifer. The Afrocarpus is filled with fruits at the right time of year and is eaten by bats, bush pigs, and birds like the rare Cape parrots, purple-crested Louries both the Knysna and Ross's louries, including Rameron, African green and the Delagorgue's pigeon. To grow the seeds. It is advised to first remove the outer layer of flesh and skin of the fruit to expose the nut. As this contains a chemical inhibitor which protects the fruit and will prevent easy germination. WARNING: These seeds although popular to grow, can literally take up to 6 months to germinate. So not for the impatient or fainthearted. This is an iconic South African tree and one of our precious heritage plants. It is also advised to keep seeds warm and moist during the germination period.

How to use your grow kit :

The grow pellets already contain a seedling germination fertiliser so it is not necessary to add more.

Take the small grow pellets and gently add water. Once they are fully expanded you will see the size to fit grow pellet inside the coco peat grow pots. Slightly fill the base with the bonsai soil. Place the expanded grow pellet onto of the soil and fill around the edges to keep the pellet sturdy but do not apply to much pressure. You can refill around the edges if needed once watered but try and avoid covering the grow pellet where your seed wants to sprout. Place the seed inside the expanded grow pellet not more than 2 thirds of the seeds depth under the coco peat. Water generously with a fine mist spray and keep moist during germination. Avoid heavy watering as this will potentially wash away the cover sprouting medium or disturb your seeds.

Common names: Outeniqua yellowwood, common yellowwood, bastard yellow wood, African yellowwood or the Weeping Yew (English), Outeniekwageelhout, kalander (Afrikaans), umkhoba, umgeya (Xhosa), mogôbagôba (Northern Sotho), umsonti (Zulu).

What you get :

3 x coco peat pots
3 x coco peat grow pellets
3 x Afrocarpus Falcultus

1 x bag of enriched bonsai soil
