The Kei apple is a stunning evergreen tree that make excellent bonsai trees. The fruits are edible. This is an attractive, drought and frost-resistant tree. It can also be grown as a shrub so it can re sprout when cut back quite easily so this is very advantageous when choosing a bonsai species. Dovyalis caffra usually reach around 3-5 m in height. However they can sometimes reach up to 8 metres tall with a very densely branched crown.
It is usually tree or spiny shrub depending on the growing conditions the plant experiences in the wild. The tree is of a moderate growth rate that can be planted close together to form a good solid barrier hedge because of the thorns. They have creamy to green flowers which form in November to December. Male flowers are around 3 mm long and grow in dense clusters of around 5-10 flowers. Female flowers are found in small groups of up to three flowers which grow on stalks that are around 4-10 mm long. The fruits can reach up to 60 mm / 6 cm in diameter and are beautiful yellowish-orange in colour. It will grow well in either full sun or light shade. The fruits are edible and make a delicious jam. Animals and birds will also love the Kei apple fruit.
The Dovyalis Caffra can also be grown from seed. The seeds should be collected when they are ripe they should then be cleaned and dried in a shady environment before planting them. Sew the seeds in a shallow seedling tray with river sand and/or a seedling propagation mix. The trees can grow up to 600mm per year.
