Striking dark green glossy leaves with lovely fragrant creamy coloured flowers. The bark is dark grey to almost black and they produce brownish red balloon shaped fruits. The bladder nut is an evergreen tree that is indigenous to South Africa and stretches up as far as Ethiopia. It usually grows in forests, mountain slopes and rocky places. The fruit is not poisonous and can be eaten however it is very bitter so not eaten very often. This tree is highly sought after and extremely popular as a bonsai tree. Plants not properly cared for can be attacked by brown scale or sooty mould. Should this occur treat as per usual with the recommended pesticide. Diospyros can be grown from seeds. These should be scratched before planting and take ages to germinate in around 4 - 8 weeks. This is an attractive stron tree that can grow up to 6 metres in height. The sweetly scented flowers attract birds and insects to the garden. Diospyros is dioecious (separate male and female trees.) The seeds can make a good coffee substitute when crushed. However this can be a tad bitter for some peoples taste.

PLEASE NOTE : Trees may vary by age, size and shape. Each tree is hand grown by a bonsai professional. The pots are hand made from clay and will also display bespoke unique colours. Each tree and pot is specifically chosen to match. Along with display rocks and pebbles. The trees may not be in fruit depending on the time of year.

The Diospyros Whyteana also known as the Blackbark and Wild Coffee (English); Swartbas and Bostolbos (Afrikaans); Mohlatsane (Northern Sotho); Munyavhili (Venda); umTenatane (Xhosa); uManzimane or umKahze (Zulu).

The Diospyros Whyteana is an evergreen shrub or small tree. The bark on the Diospyros Whyteana is smooth grey to almost black (when mature), the trunks and branches often grow and develop into very interesting changes in direction and growth and can be easily trained through wiring and/ or directional pruning techniques. The scars that may occur through wiring become exemplary features within a bonsai. The Diospyros Whyteana roots develop often as strong surface root structures, this will aid a feel of age as well as stability within your bonsai. The flowers that you will see on your Diospyros Whyteana bonsai will be creamy coloured on hairy stalks, they are fragrant, which the persistent sepals of the flowers become larger, inflated, joined and bladder like enclosing an almost spherical red fruit (the fruit will contain two seeds within that resemble coffee beans).

When you are wanting to plant your Diospyros Whyteana seed, you should first scratch the seed before planting. The seed will germinate in 4 to 8 weeks. You will find the trees grow rapidly when young and are readily available to transplant but this should be done in transplanting season which is August to October.

The Diospyros Whyteana will benefit from soils rich in humus or specified bonsai soil, and regular feeding with an organic fertilizer (containing micro and macro elements). The Diospyros Whyteana will not handle very dry soil and should be monitored regularly to ensure the soil is moist.

Common names: bladder-nut, blackbark (English); swartbas (Afrikaans); mohlatsane (North Sotho); munyavhili (V); umTenatane (Xhosa); uManzimane or umKahze (Zulu) also known as the wild coffee tree.
