A great learning activity for kids with awesome results for the garden. Vermicompost made with earth worms has been proven to contain up to ten times the necessary plant nutrients that can be found in compost made from a traditional garden compost pile. How to prepare and care for the worm farm?
First give the worm farm a quick wash to make sure there are no residue chemicals or bits of plastic or packing materials you do not want in your worm farm.
Take the tap provided in the base tray and unscrew it turn it around so the tap faces outside the drum to drain out your worm tea and excess moisture. It is packaged with the tap inside to avoid damaging the tap during transport.
Cut up small strips of newspaper, cardboard, straw, dry grass, coco peat, dry leaves and other dry fibrous material. Fill up the bins with the material. Avoid glossy print paper, plastic coated paper, remove staples, sellotape, and other inorganic matter. Fill the bins with the organic materials. Sprinkle on a small amount of soil if you do not have in the garden some potting soil will be perfectly fine. Worms need the grit from soil to grind up the food they eat as they do not have any teeth. Just make sure the soil is not chemically treated if bought from a store. The bedding must be loose and not compacted. The soil will also assist in creating a decomposer bacteria.
Keep the bin elevated off the ground with some bricks or other items to lift it clear of the base surface it is resting on.
It is essential to always keep the worm bins moist. Add small amounts of water regularly. Not too wet just moist. If you squeeze the bin material only a few drops of water should come out. Avoid making a soup and drowning the worms. To wet would also cause things to rot or become mouldy.
Grind up some egg shells and add to the bin as this will increase the calcium levels. Worms will eat pretty much anything that can decompose naturally. Things to avoid are dairy, meats, citrus, spicy foods, fats, oils, and heavily-processed foods. Continue to add newspaper, cardboard, straw, dry grass, coco peat, dry leaves and other dry fibrous material as needed.
