More about Pure Indigenous Oils
Earth conscious
Pure Indigenous are passionate about reducing their carbon footprint and supporting local, and what better way than to celebrate our own diverse indigenous plant kingdom.
Our rich tapestry of South African flora is classified into 8 biomes, these being Grassland, Savanna, Succulent Karoo, Nama Karoo, Forest, Fynbos, Desert and Thicket. This bears testimony to the great wealth of diverse plant species, as well as the many healing plants rich in essential oils.
The Cape Floral Kingdom, one of only six floristic kingdoms in the world, is the smallest and richest per unit of area. It contains the greatest diversity of plants, with almost 70% of those being unique to this location (endemic). Travel from Clanwillian on the West coast to Port Elizabeth on the Southeast coast in early spring for the greatest flower show on earth.
It is from this Fynbos area that most of the Essential oils in our range are extracted - Cape May, Cape Chamomile, African Lemon Bush, Cape Snowbush, Cape Buchu. Others, such as the African Wormwood and Cape Geranium are sourced from the drier climes of the Free State.
The carrier oils are sourced further afield, from Limpopo, Namibia and Lesotho. Still in the Southern African region.
Preserving natural heritage
The plants used in the Pure Indigenous range of essential oils have been in use for centuries by the local indigenous people in their healing practices and rituals to bring harmony to their homes, health and family.
Some of the Fynbos species require that farmers obtain a Bioprospecting License from the Department of Environmental Affairs. This entails reaching an agreement with the local communities such as the Khoi San for the cultivation of traditional plants. Many farms have their Bioprospecting License, while others are awaiting agreement from the local communities.
Sustainably sourced
Pure Indigenous strive to source organic raw materials where possible, and so far have been able to source mainly certified organic essential oils. 7 of the 8 essential oils are certified organic. Due to severe drought conditions one of the oils was not produced organically. The farms that Pure Indigenous source their oils from are organically certified by international certifying bodies such as Ceres and BCS-Oko Guarantie. When Products are not organically certified Pure Indigenous aim to source these from farms which are in organic conversion or who wild harvest.
Organic certification is a stringent process that considers many aspects; the origin of the plant materials - roots, seeds and seedlings have to have undergone a three-year conversion process if not originally organic. The nutrients used to fertilize plants have to be natural and acceptable to organic specifications, while pest, fungus and weed control need to be strictly adhered to. Organic certifying bodies do annual reviews to ensure that farms adhere to standards.
Not harmful to the environment. - No artificial ingredients - 100% natural
Pure Indigenous are passionate about nature, plants and essential oils. The founders love of Africa and its natural and cultural diversity inspired the Pure Indigenous range, a unique collection of essential oils that feature healing plants which are native to South Africa and have been used by for centuries by indigenous South Africans for their healing and well-being properties.
