Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis also known as Clanwilliam Cedar or Cape Cedar (English), Clanwilliamseder or sederboom (Afrikaans) is a small to medium tree (growing 6m – 18m in nature) that is indigenous to the Cederberg Mountains (about 240km North of Cape Town).

The Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis has a reddish grey bark with thin and fibrous flaking scale-like plates, the shape of the Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis differs as when it is young it displays a conical crown and when older displays a gnarled trunk. The branches on this plant are wide spreading and the leaves again differ when young; being needle-like and narrow, growing in spiral form; to when the tree matures and the leaves become small and scale like, lying flat along the branches in pairs. You will find both male and female cones present on the Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis; the female cones are dark brown in colour while the male cones are extremely small.

Due to the Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis’s beautiful fragrant timber, it has been over harvested for decades and is now classified as an endangered plant on the brink of extinction, planting and growing your own Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis will be a benefit to the survival of this plant.

When bonsaiing your Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis you will find that germination of the seed takes 3 – 4 weeks and once large enough to be easily handled, it is ready to be transplanted.  The best time to propagate the seed is in Autumn in dry soil which is well-drained (all Seedleme pots come with drainage holes and special Seedleme Bonsai soil for optimal growing success). Saplings are best grown in semi-shade and are to be kept moist (do not let the saplings dry out as they are not drought resistant – the adult Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis is drought-tolerant). The roots should not be disturbed if at all possible. The size of your Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis bonsai will depend on how you cut, trim and shape your tree during the growing process,

Please note: the Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis  is resinous (a sticky substance – resin like) and can catch alight relatively easily so do not place your bonsai near your braai or anywhere there is open flames.

Take the small grow pellets and gently add water. Once they are fully expanded you will see the size to fit grow pellet inside the coco peat grow pots. Slightly fill the base with the bonsai soil. Place the expanded grow pellet onto of the soil and fill around the edges to keep the pellet sturdy but do not apply to much pressure. You can refill around the edges if needed once watered but try and avoid covering the grow pellet where your seed wants to sprout. Place the seed inside the expanded grow pellet not more than 2 thirds of the seeds depth under the coco peat. Water generously with a fine mist spray and keep moist during germination. Avoid heavy watering as this will potentially wash away the cover sprouting medium or disturb your seeds.

What you get :

3 x coco peat pots
3 x coco peat grow pellets
3 x Widdringtonia Cedarbergensis (Clanwilliam Cedar, Cape Cedar) 3 Bonsai Seeds
